Netflix Announces Vince McMahon Documentary Series About Former WWE Owner

Before WWE signed over the broadcasting rights for Raw to Netflix, the streamer was working on an authorized biographical documentary about the former owner of the company, Vince McMahon. However, following the sexual misconduct accusations leveled at McMahon, he resigned from the company’s current owner, TKO, earlier this year. Now, Netflix has formally announced Mr. McMahon, a six-part miniseries that will fully chronicle his rise and fall in the wrestling business.Prior to McMahon taking over the WWE–which was then known as the World Wrestling Federation or WWF–McMahon’s father, Vince McMahon Sr. ran the company as a regional wrestling territory. Once the younger McMahon assumed control, he ignored the previous agreements between the wrestling territories and swooped up the major stars like Hulk Hogan before taking WWF to a higher level that surpassed its competition and ushered in a new era of sports entertainment.

The documentary features excerpts from 200 hours of interviews with McMahon that were recorded before the scandals broke, as well as his family members and several of WWE’s most famous wrestlers. Additionally, the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s sexual scandals were also interviewed for this series.”The goal behind Mr. McMahon was to pull back the curtain and reveal the true Vince McMahon, obscured beneath the persona he presented to the world,” said director Chris Smith in a statement. “Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations. The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind.”Mr. McMahon will premiere on Netflix on September 25.Image credit: Getty Images/Michelle Farsi
